Why We Exist

The Cyber Foundation exists because family office cybersecurity is an unsolved problem that none of the existing players can solve. Everyone serving this market arrived from somewhere else: from IT, from the enterprise, from physical security, or from a product. Each carries the DNA of the problem they were actually built for. The Cyber Foundation is being built to approach the challenge from first principles: start with the family office itself, treat information risk as an executive function, and derive everything else from there.

The observation

The industry has all the pieces and none of the fit. There are people who can operate technology, people who understand risk, people with deep technical knowledge, and no shortage of products. But every combination on offer is second or third order: a capability built for a different client, extended toward the family office and falling short of it:

  • Technology operators without risk thinking
  • Enterprise security without the family office client model
  • Risk advisories without the technical well
  • Vendors whose frame is always their own product

Meanwhile the family office sits at the most abnormal point in the whole market: a small team with limited defensive resources guarding bank-level assets. A vault of gold with one sleepy guard. In any other paradigm, assets of that size would command immense protection. Here, nothing forces the correction: no regulator, no board, no auditor. The gap simply persists until it is exploited.

The three convictions

Information risk is an executive function. Information is the asset; technology is just how it moves. These decisions belong at the top of the family office, alongside investment decisions, framed so the principal’s existing risk instincts can engage. Delegating them down to whoever seems most technical is how the industry got here.

The family office comes first. Not the framework, not the stack, not the report format. A family office is a family with an operating capability attached, small by design, private by nature, with stakes that never appear on an enterprise risk ledger. Everything The Cyber Foundation builds starts from what a family office actually is and derives outward.

The fix must be structural, not incremental. No incumbent can solve this by trying harder, because each one’s limitation is its business model. The only durable answer is a new kind of organization: one that combines risk thinking with technical depth, sits on the family’s side of the table, and has nothing to sell downstream.

Why build it, specifically

Each conviction answers a specific failure in the market:

  • The executive-function reframe answers the abstraction facet: invisible, jargon-wrapped risk gets delegated away until someone makes it legible at the top.
  • The family-office-first posture answers the enterprise facet and the small business gap: nothing built for organizations, or scaled down from them, fits how a family actually runs.
  • The structural fix answers the MSP, risk advisory, and tool-first facets: the misfit is in the incumbents’ DNA and incentives, so only a differently built organization removes it.

Why a foundation

The thesis only holds if the incentives hold. The Cyber Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated exclusively to family office cybersecurity. It was founded in 2025 as a fiscally sponsored project of Digital Harbor Foundation, a 501(c)(3). Conflict-free advice has to be guaranteed by charter, not by promises. No products, no referral economics, no acquisition path that bends the advice. The organizational form is itself part of the answer.
